Today (July 31), the 13th Edition of the CPRJ Plastics in Packaging Conference and Showcase took place in Shanghai, bringing together companies from across the plastic packaging value chain to explore innovative solutions focused on two key themes: new consumer trends and global expansion.

 

Co-hosted by Adsale Group and Amcor, this year’s event drew over 650 professionals, including representatives from leading and emerging consumer brands in food, beverages, alcohol, personal care, pet food, retail, chain restaurants, and delivery services, as well as packaging manufacturers and ODMs.

The 13th Edition of the CPRJ Plastics in Packaging Conference and Showcase attracted over 600 packaging professionals to explore the future of packaging. 

 

The conference featured a dynamic program that included a main forum, three parallel sub-forums, and several thematic salons. With over 50 insightful presentations, the conference covered topics such as market trends, technological advancements, application innovations, and policy analysis.

 

One of the themed salons, titled “Chain Takeaways and Sustainable Packaging,” spotlighted sustainable packaging practices and cost-efficiency strategies in the rapidly growing takeout sector.

 

An on-site exhibition showcased solutions from more than 60 companies, including end-user brands, packaging product manufacturers, raw materials suppliers, and providers of intelligent equipment solutions.

Against the backdrop of accelerated global green transformation and ongoing local policy advancements, the plastic packaging industry is at a critical crossroads of systemic reconstruction.

 

At the main forum, the experts and representatives from industry associations, research institutions, and leading companies engaged in in-depth discussions on topics such as plastic ban, the PPWR, circular economy, food contact safety standards, and corporate strategic practices.

Hongjun Wu, Deputy Secretary General at China Packaging Federation, started from the macro policies. He pointed out that under the promotion of the plastic ban, the plastic packaging industry is undergoing a profound transformation driven by policies, technologies, and markets.

 

According to him, this transformation is shifting from a linear model of “production-use-disposal” to a green ecological model of “circular-recycling-value added”.

Xin She, President of Flexible Packaging Solutions for Greater China and North Asia in Amcor PLC, shared the strategies of “New Amcor” to promote the innovations of rigid and flexible packaging through integrating the company’s R&D and manufacturing capabilities.

Yonggang Wang, Secretary General of China Plastic Recycling Association of CRRA, spoke from the circularity aspect, and introduced policy trends and practices for recycling and reuse of plastic packaging. He emphasizes that ecological design, easy-to-recycle design, expanding the application of recycled materials, and the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system are key focuses in the future.

Jasper Liu, Assistant to the Director from China National Export Commodities Packaging Research Institute, targeted on the global hot topic – PPWR, decoded how the regulations impact Chinese companies’ global expansion plan, and provided some recommendations.

Jun Liu, Researcher in Shanghai Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention, shared the safety and quality development of food contact plastic products. He also talked about the research progress in areas such as the establishment of safety systems, licensing management, and compliance enforcement.

For example, the packaging of Nescafe Smoovlatte (268 ml) achieves a weight reduction from 19g to 16.6g through lightweight design, and the Nespresso capsule recycling program.

Lianghai Sun, Deputy Director of Packaging Materials Research and Development at Zhonghebaosang Biotech Co., Ltd., elaborated the concept of "Freshness Preservation" to "Circularity Preservation" and shared the sustainable development that integrates extract processing of mulberries with green packaging.

 

He noted that innovations in nanomaterials for enhanced preservation, edible packaging materials (similar to candy coatings), biodegradable materials, intelligent packaging monitoring systems, and packaging design under a circular economy will be key research hotspots and breakthrough directions for future green packaging materials.

Yizhang Xie, Director of Technical & Commercialization Services at Mary Kay China, introduced the group's innovative practices in green packaging, which include soft tubes, plastic bottles, caps, pumps, and delivery cushioning bubble bags made from PCR materials; replaceable magnetic eyeshadow and blush palettes; reusable packaging cartons; and reduced plastic packaging designs.

General Manager at Fuhai (Dongying) New Material Technology Co., Ltd., introduced the company's polyester materials project, "From a Drop of Oil to a Bottle".  Fuhai has already launched facilities with capacities of 2 million tons per year for PX and 2.5 million tons per year for PTA. Once the 1.5 million tons per year polyester packaging materials project is completed, the "refining-aromatics-polyester" chain will be fully realized.

For example, the packaging of Nescafe Smoovlatte (268 ml) achieves a weight reduction from 19g to 16.6g through lightweight design, and the Nespresso capsule recycling program.

Lianghai Sun, Deputy Director of Packaging Materials Research and Development at Zhonghebaosang Biotech Co., Ltd., elaborated the concept of "Freshness Preservation" to "Circularity Preservation" and shared the sustainable development that integrates extract processing of mulberries with green packaging.

 

He noted that innovations in nanomaterials for enhanced preservation, edible packaging materials (similar to candy coatings), biodegradable materials, intelligent packaging monitoring systems, and packaging design under a circular economy will be key research hotspots and breakthrough directions for future green packaging materials.

General Manager at Fuhai (Dongying) New Material Technology Co., Ltd., introduced the company's polyester materials project, "From a Drop of Oil to a Bottle".  Fuhai has already launched facilities with capacities of 2 million tons per year for PX and 2.5 million tons per year for PTA. Once the 1.5 million tons per year polyester packaging materials project is completed, the "refining-aromatics-polyester" chain will be fully realized.
