(K-Interview) How does Borouge solve the pain points for higher plastics circularity?

In an onsite interview with Adsale Plastics Network (AdsaleCPRJ.com) at the K 2022 fairground, Eddie Wang, Senior Vice President, Asia North, Borouge Pte Ltd., opined about the challenges for transforming the industry to a circular economy. He also emphasised the importance of value chain collaboration.

 

The pain points Eddie Wang identified for achieving higher levels of circularity include inadequate waste collection infrastructures, the need to make the recycling industry more self-sustainable, and the fragmentation of the industry, especially in the Asian markets.

 

Borouge has been making efforts to address these challenges, he underlined. Regarding waste collection infrastructures, for example, the companies enhance product recyclability to allow easier processing in those infrastructures and enable a higher quality of recyclates.

 

To make the recycling industry more sustainable, reducing costs is inevitable. Eddie Wang remarked that the costs of recycled products depend on production scale as “the bigger the scale it is, the lower the cost it can be”.  Borouge has been making efforts to expand its portfolio of recycled polyolefins, and collaborating with partners and local authorities to advance the progress of the recycling industry.

 

The key themes for Borealis and Borouge at K 2022 were innovation, collaboration and acceleration. “Collaboration is at the centre of what we are offering to the market,” said Eddie Wang. He mentioned that many innovations of Borealis and Borouge resulted from collaboration with other technology providers and value chain partners.

 

Besides, Eddie Wang also introduced Borouge’s exhibit highlights at the trade fair booth, including: recycling polyolefins from used PE heavy duty shipping sacks (HDSS) and fully recyclable mono-material pouch solutions.
