A recent report released by Moore Recycling Associates, a California based consultant, reveals that the United States recovered about 415,000 tons of post-consumer film in 2007, 27% higher than the same figure recorded in 2005. The total includes both plastic bags and product wraps.
As noted in the report, the actual number may well be higher, given the shift toward export markets that occurred during 2007, and the challenge of collecting survey data from export buyers.
Source from US Environmental Protection Agency reflects that around 12% of plastic bags and film are recycled annually, while in 2007 there was a notable increase in the amount of post-consumer recycled film that went into new film and sheet applications. In addition, the emerge of more at-store collection programs and the introduction of regulations requiring stores to offer collection bins in California and New York have opened up easier access to recycle plastic bag or wraps.
