Taiwan to charge plastic bag suppliers recycling fee

The Environmental Protection Administration of the Executive Yuan of Taiwan recently announced a new regulation to deal with the problem of plastic bag overuse, expected to be effective from January 1, 2008.
The new policy will categorize plastic bags as recyclable goods and plastic bag suppliers will be subjected to a certain amount of recycling fee. It is expected that such a policy will lead to a price surge of plastic bags, resulting in a lower demand for them.
Also, stores and restuarants on the island will be allowed to provide plastic bags of any thickness with or without charge from this March, as the administration has announced to cancel the limitations on the thickness and distribution of plastic bags due to their ineffectiveness.
