As the global economy rebuilds itself after the pandemic, China fully opens up and international trade is expected to recover significantly. Janny Ji, Director PA12, Asia Pacific, Evonik Specialty Chemicals (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., believes that this will drive the market demand for high-performance nylon materials and further promote the development and growth of applications in markets such as electric vehicles, electronics, and medical and sports equipment.

“Against this background, we need to strengthen the integration of supply chains, improve production efficiency and product quality,” she said.

Driven by global low-carbon development and to achieve carbon neutral goals, many industries regard sustainability as the direction of development. In China, with the announcement of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals, companies have adopted “green and low carbon” as an important component in their latest developments.

In response to the sustainable development needs of related applications, the high-performance nylon industry will further develop solutions that are environmentally friendly, energy-saving and low-carbon. “Sustainable development has become one of the major trends in global development. In China, with the announcement of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals, companies have adopted 'green and low carbon' as an important component in their latest development. Technological upgrade and energy transformation are imperative,” she said.

She believes that Evonik's green transformation coincides with China's dual carbon goals. She says: “We are starting to promote the implementation of corporate strategic transformation in China, which includes stepping up local research and development of sustainable innovative products, speeding up investments into the Chinese market, and promoting energy-saving transformation in local factories.”

In May last year, Evonik announced the launch of the next stage of strategic transformation on a global scale, which comprehensively and systematically integrated sustainable development into every aspect of its corporate strategy. “We have set targets to significantly increase the proportion of the sale of sustainable products while reducing the footprint of our manufacturing operations. We are also making targeted and large-scale investments in green growth areas and using sustainability as a core driver of innovation,”she said.

Thanks to its high stability, high flexibility, high temperature resistance and light weight, Evonik VESTAMID PA12 boasts a wide range of applications, including electric vehicles, daily products, 3D printing and foam materials. At CHINAPLAS 2023, Evonik is showcasing multilayer hydrogen transmission pipes, cooling pipes and high-voltage electrical busbars made from this material.

The multi-layer hydrogen delivery pipelines made of Evonik VESTAMID PA12 features good chemical resistance, hydrolysis resistance and low-temperature impact resistance. Compared with traditional metal pipes, its weight is greatly reduced; the inner layer of fluorine material can provide a good clean pipe environment that also prevents hydrogen embrittlement; at the same time, its electrical conductivity increases the safety of the hydrogen pipeline system.

In addition, Evonik VESTAMID PA12 cooling pipes and high-voltage electrical busbar reduce costs and raise efficiency. The thermoplastic PA12 cooling pipe can meet the technical requirements of quick joint connection and high-efficiency thermoforming, improving production efficiency and saving production costs. The PA12 extrusion molding process can also improve the production efficiency of high-voltage electrical busbars.

Evonik is also displaying VESTAMID eCO E40, which is made of sustainable raw materials based on waste tires. In the value chain, this recyclable raw material can replace fossil raw materials by 50%. The product can be used to manufacture the midsole or outsole of sports shoes.

“In 2023, the high-performance nylon market will develop in a direction that is more environmentally friendly, smarter and more efficient." She summed up. “Ultimately, technical innovation and product upgrading are always important directions for the development of the industry.” She hopes that sustainable concepts and products can draw more attention and be used by more consumers.
