Brabender’s new measuring system determines rubber density

Brabender introduces its measuring system ElaTest for density determination of rubber and rubber compounds within the production-accompanying incoming goods and quality control in a modern and robust design with high operating comfort and additional functions.

In rubber production, density is a key process parameter that correlates with the degree of cross-linking or the hardness of the elastomer used. Density determination is of great importance for the development of recipes and for the continuous production-accompanying incoming goods and quality control.

ElaTest offers density determination function with robust design and ergonomic operation.

Advantages of ElaTest

Brabender’s ElaTest can be used to determine density of non-vulcanized, which means uncured rubber and rubber compounds reliably and quickly. Users can also be benefited from the MetaBridge software solution, the ergonomic arrangement of the operating elements and the stainless steel design.

In addition, the system does not require any auxiliary equipment, such as an immersion medium for which the density must be known in advance. Optionally, it allows use of internationally recognized DAkkS-accredited calibration of the measuring system.

Process of density determination

The new ElaTest has a built-in balance with automatic measured value transmission and a built-in computer with touch screen, allowing easier operation. The density of sample is determined with the integrated balance via an electronic displacement measuring system.

“After weighing in the measuring cylinder, the sample is compressed by a piston at a defined pressure. The sample volume and the sample density are then calculated taking into account the diameter of the measuring cylinder and the determined piston position,” explained Michael Stanko, Business Development Manager Plastics & Rubber.

User-friendly operation

Measurement results can be conveniently accessed via web browser. Additionally, third-party systems, such as LIMS and ERP, are supported via Brabender WebAPI.

ElaTest also offers the options for multiple determinations and the statistical evaluation of the test results through the correlation software. Tolerances for a reference adjustment can also be set for each measurement, enabling a quick quality check.
