Orion S.A., a global specialty chemicals producer, is investing EUR 12.8 million, including half of the funding from the German government and European Union, to further develop a circular method to produce carbon black from alternative carbon sources.

Orion S.A. invested millions to develop circular method to produce carbon black.

The project, called “Clean Carbon Black Research and Development Project”, aims to improve Orion’s yield and throughput in carbon black production using circular feedstocks, thus, potentially reducing the carbon footprint of the process and the cost of the material.

It could also accelerate the development in circularity and fulfil the growing demand for sustainable materials in tire industry. Technological breakthroughs could also have significant ramifications for energy integration and molecular recycling of tires.

Half of the investment, which is EUR 6.4 million, are provided by the decarbonization program of Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action, supported by the EU’s NextGenerationEU fund.

A research facility is being built for the project at Orion’s main innovation center at its plant in Cologne, Germany.
