Tosaf develops PFAS-free additives for extrusion

Tosaf developed processing aids for the extrusion of polyolefins that do not contain fluoroelastomers. They can replace conventional products for a wide range of film applications and meet the requirements of the FDA and EFSA for use in contact with food.

The grade AP9709PE EU provides enhanced rheological properties while AP9711PE EU focuses on optical properties, including clarity and haze.

Tosaf developed PFAS-free processing aids with enhanced properties.

In laboratory tests, Tosaf compared the processing properties of standard Tosaf’s fluoroelastomer-based processing aid (AP5645PE EU) and alternative PFAS-free products.

Results show that flow behavior in capillary rheometer and pressure reduction in extruder die are largely consistent.

Optical properties, including light transmission, haze and clarity, of PFAS-free solutions even show slight advantages over pure PE-LLD and compound with conventional standard processing aid.

Current customer applications include a 5-layer coex-line using 1% of Tosaf’s PFAS-free processing aid AP9709PE EU in the outer layer. The films can be printed, sealed and laminated.

Compared to standard PFAS-based processing aid, the PFAS-free application enables 5-10°C lower melt temperature. It also shows a significant lower occurrence of melt fracture and improved optical properties, such as haze.
