First-of-its-kind gaseous thermal barrier to improve EV battery safety
Arkema launched Foranext Gaseous Thermal Barrier (GTB) line, which is engineered to prevent battery thermal runaway propagation and improve electric vehicle (EV) battery safety.
Arkema launched its first-of-its-kind gaseous thermal barrier.
EV manufacturers continue to develop solutions to safely improve EV battery charge time, such as immersion cooling fluids. Although the technology improves charge time and create an electrical insulation protecting against electric arcing and vibration dampening, ignition remains key risk.
Arkema is the first company to suggest a gaseous alternative to solid thermal barrier. Foranext GTB can be added to immersion cooling fluid technology to fight thermal runaway propagation.
The material is activated when battery cell reaches abnormally high temperatures and forms a gaseous barrier around the cell, isolating it from the rest the battery. Gases produced during thermal runaway process can ignite outside the EV, but GTB help reduce ignition probability.
Foranext GTB is a key product that supports Arkema’s sustainable development strategy to address global needs. The company is committed to a 48.5% reduction in its greenhouse gas emissions for Scopes 1+2 by 2030 compared with 2019.
