Supply chain partners collaborate to launch recycled snack packaging

Mar 20, 2024

Supply chain partners, including GreenDot, INEOS Oleffins & Polymers Europe, IRPLAST, Amcor and PepsiCo, collaborate to launch new snack packaging that contains 50% recycled plastic for Sunbites, PepsiCo’s well-known snack brand.

Supply chain partners collaborate to launch new packaging with recycled content for Sunbites.

The partners across the entire supply chain collaborate to enable the sustainable packaging:

  • GreenDot ensures the procurement and supply of post-consumer plastic packaging waste, which is converted into TACOIL (pyrolysis oil) using Plastic Energy’s technology.

  • INEOS uses the pyrolysis oil to first produce recycled PP, before turning this into virgin-quality recycled PP resin.

  • IRPLAST uses the new resin to produce new packaging films that contain 50% of post-consumer recycled materials.

  • Amcor transforms the films into printed packaging for PepsiCo.

The new packaging was launched in the UK and Ireland for Sunbites in late 2023. The packaging uses flexible film packaging to ensure food maintains its freshness and prevent food waste.

The recycled polymer content is certified under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC PLUS) scheme.

This collaboration also aligns with PepsiCo’s aims to eliminate virgin fossil-based plastic in crisp and chip bags in Europe by 2030.
