The Mitsubishi Chemical Group announced that its biomass-based polycarbonatediol – BENEBiOL – has been adopted as a raw material for AROLEP 940 series, polyurethane coatings for wind turbine blade protection, by AEROX.

Biomass-based polycarbonatediol from the Mitsubishi Chemical Group is adopted in PU coatings for wind turbine blade protection.

This application follows the collaboration under Joint Research and Development Agreement (JRDA) with AEROX. This marks the first-ever use of BENEBiOL in wind turbine blade coating agents.

BENEBiOL is produced mainly for use as a primary raw material in polyurethane resins. The material has a completely new chemical structure due to the use of biomass-based materials, and has up to 93% biomass content. Moreover, it has durability and chemical resistance superior to conventional petroleum-based PCD.

AEROX’s AROLEP 940 series coatings are used to protect the leading edges of wind turbine blades, in which resistance against wind and rain erosion is essential.

The incorporation of BENEBiOL into these coatings provides outstanding erosion resistance surpassing conventional products even in the harshest offshore conditions and can reduce the frequency and cost of blade maintenance.

BENEBiOL is used as a material in painting and coatings, elastomers and synthetic and artificial leathers for automobiles, furniture, outdoor gear, and more. Going forward, by further developing BENEBiOL, the Mitsubishi Chemical Group will deliver even more value-added products and contribute to the sustainable society.
