Indonesia's Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment aims to put 15 million electric vehicles (EVs) — 13 million two-wheeled and 2 million four-wheeled vehicles — on the road by 2030, reported ANTARA News.

In his statement, Rachmat Kaimuddin, the ministry's deputy for transportation and infrastructure emphasized that EV transition in Indonesia presents a strategic opportunity for national economic growth, energy security and air quality improvement.

“To promote electric vehicles in Indonesia, we need to make them available, affordable, reliable, and ensure good infrastructure,” said Kaimuddin.

To accelerate the development of the EV ecosystem in Indonesia, the ministry is collaborating with the Electric Mobility Ecosystem Association (AEML) and the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI).

The government has also partnered with the Enhancing Readiness for the Transition to Electric Vehicles (ENTREV) Implementing Organization and the Indonesia Environment Fund (IEF).

These stakeholders contribute to finding solutions to key barriers in EV development in Indonesia, especially in policy, financing, vehicle charging infrastructure, and corporate-consumer engagement.

Current EV ecosystem in Indonesia

According to Jakarta Globe, EV sales reached nearly 18,000 units between January and July 2024, doubling the sales to the same period last year. However, around 150,000 electric motorcycles, cars, buses, and trucks are currently in use across the country.

The Indonesian government has implemented several initiatives to accelerate the EV transition, including tax incentives for EV purchases and imports.
