Wittmann Group, Austria’s leading supplier of processing equipment for plastic, recently held a grand groundbreaking ceremony for its new plant in Kunshan, China.

The new production facility is expected to commence operations by December 2025. At that time, the first “made in China” Wittmann Battenfeld injection molding machine will roll off the production line, marking the introduction of Wittmann’s full range of high-end products and technologies to China.

Werner Wittmann, owner and Managing Director of the Wittmann Group, delivered the speech.

To gain deeper insights into this investment, Tiffany Zhu, Executive Editor of Adsale Plastics Network, conducted an exclusive interview with Kevin Wang, General Manager of Wittmann Battenfeld (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. and Wittmann Robot (Kunshan) Co., Ltd.

RMB 100 million investment enhances production strategy

Zhu: Wittmann established its production base in Kunshan in 2005. What were the key considerations in building the new plant?

Wang: The expansion of Kunshan base signifies Wittmann’s strong commitment to expand the Chinese and Asian markets. Currently, the Kunshan base serves as our only production facility in Asia, and it plays a vital role in serving the entire region.

While the Group’s core business is concentrated in Europe and North America, we aim to increase our market share in Asia with the building of the new plant.

Zhu: Please elaborate more about the investment scale and production strategy?

The total land area of the new plant is approximately 8.55 acres. In addition to the existing 1,000sqm of building space, we are adding 10,000sqm, including a 6,000sqm production area and 4,000sqm for offices. The total investment for the project is around RMB 100 million.

In terms of product lines, besides our existing auxiliary equipment like mold temperature controllers and robots, we will introduce the production of all-electric precision injection molding machines with clamping force ranging from 90-380 tons. The new facility will have an annual production capacity of 80-100 machines.

The Kunshan base will become the second Wittmann factory capable of producing the full range of products, with the other located in Hungary.

The new facility will also consist of three key centers: R&D Center, Exhibition Center, and Training Center. The R&D Center will collaborate closely with the headquarters to localize solutions. The 500sqm Exhibition Center will showcase various application products, providing customers with a hands-on experience of our world-class quality. The Training Center will offer regular monthly training sessions for both customers and internal teams, helping to enhance technical understanding and knowledge.

Localized production boosts cost-effectiveness and delivery time

Zhu: Does the production of injection molding machines in Kunshan indicate an acceleration of the localized production process? What impact will this have on customers?

Wang: China is one of the largest global production bases for injection molding machines, with its supply chain improving year by year. The technical capabilities of China’s supply chain for injection molding machines is now meeting global standards. In light of this, we will expedite the development of a localized supply chain.

At present, over 80% of the components in Wittmann Battenfeld injection molding machines are imported. However, by next year, the percentage of imported parts in the machines produced in Kunshan will drop to below 50%. We already had over 300 different parts being prototyped locally and sent to Europe for testing.

In fact, Wittmann’s global products will increasingly rely on the Chinese supply chain for support. Although we are sourcing locally, our quality management system and control standards remain consistent across the globe. All locally sourced components have to undergo testing at our headquarters.

With the integration of a localized supply chain, we are also aiming for shorter delivery time and higher cost-effectiveness. For example, the current delivery time for Wittmann Battenfeld injection molding machines is at about 4-5 months, excluding shipping time. After the new plant goes live next year, our goal is to make it less than 3 months, greatly enhancing our responsiveness to dynamic market demands.

Turnkey solution under a single brand becomes trump card

Zhu: How do Wittmann Battenfeld injection molding machines stand out when compared to other brands?

Wang: What sets Wittmann apart in the market is that we are a supplier capable of providing a truly turnkey solution, from injection molding machines to robotics and automation systems, material handling systems, dryers, gravimetric and volumetric blenders, granulators, mold temperature controllers, and chillers. This compelling offering is our biggest competitive advantage.

This is especially important for some companies, particularly those in the mid to high-end markets. When it comes to micro-injection molding, after sourcing a suitable micro-injection molding machine, you still need to pair it with the appropriate robotic arm and mold temperature controller. For Wittmann, we are able to tailor a total solution for such products, offering a turnkey service.

At this year’s CHINAPLAS, Wittmann Battenfeld showcased two solutions that received excellent market feedback: a micro-injection molding machine for processing vein clips and an all-electric injection molding machine for producing syringe covers. These mid to high-end applications in the medical industry are experiencing explosive growth, and we have seen a surge in orders for similar solutions this year.

In addition to medical applications, this all-electric injection molding machine is also suitable for cosmetics packaging. Wittmann Battenfeld has established a significant lead in certain niche injection molding market segments, differentiating itself from standardized machines.

Focusing on niche markets avoids market saturation

Zhu: Currently, the entire injection molding machine industry is facing intense competition, leading to market saturation. Beyond its technical advantages, what is the market positioning of Wittmann?

Wang: We are becoming more specialized and going for segmentation. The overall injection molding machine market is on a downward trajectory, with intense competition leading to homogenization. As a result, some injection molding machine manufacturers are struggling with insufficient orders. This phenomenon also extends to downstream customer markets. However, products targeting mid to high-end markets have shown robust performance.

Wittmann Battenfeld injection molding machines excel in various fields, including automotive, electronics, medical, and packaging. Taking into account the Kunshan base’s production capacity and service capabilities, as well as our evaluation of the current downstream markets, we have decided to first focus on the mid to high-end medical and cosmetics markets. The decision is also driven by the growing demand for micro-injection molding machines in these two markets.
