Covestro has officially commissioned its newly modernized TDI (toluene diisocyanate) production plant in Dormagen, Germany, marking a significant milestone in sustainable chemical manufacturing.

TDI (toluene diisocyanate), as an essential component in flexible polyurethane foams, enables comfort applications across multiple industries, including home furnishings, bedding, and automotive interiors.

The upgraded facility, celebrated at an event attended by North Rhine-Westphalia Environmental Minister Oliver Krischer and industry leaders, showcases how industrial innovation can simultaneously boost competitiveness and environmental performance.

Commencing the modernization initiative in summer 2023, Covestro's comprehensive upgrade involved the installation of extensive new infrastructure including over 3.5 kilometers of piping systems, approximately 14 kilometers of cabling, and several hundred new pieces of equipment along with associated valves and monitoring devices throughout the facility.

At the heart of the transformation is a massive new reactor standing nearly 20 meters tall and weighing over 150 tons. This engineering marvel captures reaction heat to generate steam - a breakthrough that slashes the plant's energy consumption by 80% compared to conventional processes. The change translates to an annual reduction of 22,000 tons of CO emissions, equivalent to removing about 4,800 cars from the road each year.

Dr. Philip Bahke, Head of Covestro's North Rhine-Westphalia Site Network, emphasized the dual benefits: "The successful completion of this project shows that climate protection and competitiveness can go hand in hand. The modernized plant sets new standards in energy efficiency and underlines our path toward climate-neutral production."

The Dormagen plant, already Europe's largest TDI production site with 300,000-ton annual capacity, now offers customers a product with significantly improved sustainability credentials.

"With the successful modernization, we can now offer our customers TDI with an even better carbon footprint," noted Dr. Christine Mendoza-Frohn, Head of Sales for Performance Materials in EMEA and LATAM. "This supports our customers in achieving their own sustainability goals and strengthens our position as a reliable partner for climate-neutral and circular solutions."

The Dormagen plant is already Europe's largest TDI production site with 300,000-ton annual capacity.

Looking beyond this achievement, Covestro announced ambitious new global targets to reduce energy-related CO emissions by 20% per ton of product by 2030 (compared to 2020 levels). The company views energy efficiency as critical to reaching operational climate neutrality by 2035. The Dormagen modernization, partially funded by Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action(BMWK), serves as a blueprint for upgrading existing industrial assets worldwide.

TDI remains essential for producing flexible polyurethane foams found in everyday comfort products - from mattresses and sofa cushions to car seats. With this upgrade, Covestro ensures these ubiquitous materials will be made with dramatically lower environmental impact moving forward.
