The market landscape of the plastics industry in 2025 is catching attention. LG Chem anticipates that although the market demand for lightweight and high-performance materials will continue to grow, the whole industry faces the challenges of oversupply. Therefore, companies are striving to bring positive changes to the industry by developing new material technologies that reduce costs and enhance efficiency, as well as exploring innovative applications of eco-friendly materials.

Green materials as the driving force for development

LG Chem emphasizes that the key to promoting sustainable development in the plastics industry lies in the development and application of eco-friendly materials, and the company's efforts in this area are noteworthy. Since launching its eco-friendly material brand LETZero in 2021, LG Chem has been committed to achieving zero environmental pollution and zero growth in carbon emissions through diversified recycling and production technologies.

At last year's CHINAPLAS, LG Chem showcased a new generation of eco-friendly polyethylene carbonate (PEC) based on carbon dioxide for the first time.

Highlight exhibits at CHINAPLAS 2025

At this year's exhibition, LG Chem showcases its UniqableTM mono-material MDOPE/BOPE, which boasts excellent heat resistance, ductility, and high transparency. When combined with PE film, it can be used to create recyclable all-PE mono-material packaging, which can replace the difficult-to-recycle PA+PE or PET+PE composite packaging materials. This material has already been sold to global customers.

Currently, most flexible packaging printing layers use high-heat-resistant PET films due to their unique processing, clarity, brightness, and chemical resistance, and are then combined with PE films that have good heat-sealing properties. However, these composite films are difficult to recycle.

Therefore, the HDPE material with high heat resistance and rigidity developed by LG Chem, which can produce MDOPE/BOPE films, not only replaces PET films for printing but also effectively addresses global regulations such as PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation) and EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility), promoting the sustainable development of packaging industry.

Accelerate transition to low-carbon investment portfolio

To align with ESG trends and respond to the rapidly changing market environment, the entire supply chain encompassing the upstream and downstream of the plastics industry is transitioning towards low-carbon and green practices. Eco-friendly materials and high-value-added innovative materials will become the main trends in industry development.

LG Chem is also accelerating its transition to a low-carbon investment portfolio and actively promoting carbon reduction actions. The company is enhancing the competitiveness of its low-carbon business by introducing an internal carbon pricing mechanism, establishing a comprehensive carbon management system and an automated product carbon footprint calculation system, and building a carbon reduction cooperation model.

In the field of eco-friendly materials, LG Chem will focus on recycling and renewable energy materials to accelerate the transformation of its business structure and improve technical capabilities such as chemical recycling. LG Chem also emphasizes that it will continue to expand its eco-friendly product portfolio, promote collaboration with customers, introduce new processes, and increase the use of eco-friendly raw materials and fuels.

Three major growth engines for business

LG Chem has identified three growth engines, namely eco-friendly materials, battery materials, and global new drugs for the coming years, while also advancing business restructuring.

Regarding digital transformation, LG Chem is actively promoting the application of AI technology in production, quality, R&D, and environmental safety. The company is introducing DMAIC (an important tool for process improvement in Lean Six Sigma management) and the Citizen Data Scientist (CDS) platform to inject new momentum into efficient operations and sustainable development.
