As the plastics industry undergoes profound structural adjustments, Annie Qin, General Manager of Guangdong Simcheng Plastics Machinery Co., Ltd., shares her insights on future developments in the industry, focusing on market trends, technological innovation, and corporate strategy.

Structural optimization and green growth

Qin expresses cautious optimism about the global plastics market in 2025. She anticipates that the growth rate of the traditional polyolefin sector will slow to 2%-3%, with emerging markets and high-end applications, such as lithium battery diaphragms and other new energy areas, driving growth. Conversely, she expects degradable and recycled plastics to lead the industry with an impressive annual compound growth rate exceeding 15%.

To navigate this trend, Qin emphasizes the need for companies to balance the “optimization of traditional business models” with “investments in green technology”. She advises prioritizing high-value products, including high-performance materials like PEKK engineering plastics for aerospace and FDA/EU 10/2011 certified medical-grade recycled plastics.

She also suggests companies adjust production capacities in response to policy shifts, particularly in developing countries and the increasing demand for low-carbon materials in European and American markets.

“Companies that rapidly adapt to market change and maintain core technologies will emerge as leaders during this industry's next reshuffle,” Qin concludes.

Driving forces: Sustainability, technology, and regional differentiation

Analyzing the key factors influencing the plastics industry's development, Qin identifies three main drivers. First, environmental protection policies have accelerated industrial transformation. Global plastic ban curbs demand for disposable plastics while promoting biodegradable and bio-based materials. The introduction of carbon tariffs is expected to raise production costs for traditional petrochemical plastics, pushing companies toward low-carbon processes and renewable raw materials.

Second, advances in chemical recycling technology have improved the purity of recycled plastics, particularly in high-value applications like food-grade packaging, facilitating broader adoption.

Third, in emerging markets such as Southeast Asia and India, demand for traditional plastics is projected to grow at an annual rate of 4%-5%, driven by population growth and manufacturing relocation. In contrast, European and American markets are increasingly focused on developing high-end materials, like engineering plastics for lightweight automobiles.

Simcheng debuts its first PI film production line at CHINAPLAS 2025.

High-end breakthroughs and smart upgrades

As a leader in film equipment manufacturing, Simcheng's technological innovations emphasize both “high-end application” and “smart production”. The company has expanded its offerings from traditional cast PP/PE equipment to high-performance film production equipment, including lithium battery diaphragms, PI films for electronics and aerospace, and high-temperature insulation materials (PPS/PEEK/PA/LCP films).

“There is significant demand for substituting imported high-end film materials, and our technological edge positions us to meet this need,” says Qin.

All of Simcheng’s equipment is connected to an Internet of Things (IoT) system, enabling real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and optimized energy efficiency. In product development, digital twin technology facilitates simulation testing, reducing trial and error costs and enhancing R&D efficiency. “Intelligent technology not only represents a technological upgrade but is also a clear choice for the industry to reduce costs and improve efficiency,” adds Qin.

At this year's CHINAPLAS, Simcheng debuts its first PI film production line, aimed at high-end applications in the electronics and aerospace sectors. This development overcomes previous technological bottlenecks and reduces reliance on imports, enhancing autonomy and control within the industrial chain.

In the next 2-3 years, Simcheng's core strategy will center on capacity expansion and intelligent upgrades. A smart factory currently under construction in Foshan, Guangdong, is expected to commence production in 2027. By integrating intelligent manufacturing systems with green production processes, the new facility is expected to boost production capacity by 2-3 times.
