BASF's TPU Innovations Power Sustainable Growth Across Asia-Pacific Industries

Nov 25, 2025

From the soles of high-performance sneakers to the sheathing of electric vehicle charging cables, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is quietly transforming industries. At the forefront of this transformation is BASF, whose TPU portfolio is driving innovation in sectors ranging from consumer electronics to healthcare and industrial automation.

TPU is a versatile elastomer known for its durability, flexibility, and processability. BASF’s flagship brands – Elastollan®Infinergy®, and Freeflex® – offer solutions across the full hardness spectrum, including polyester, polyether, and bio-based grades. This enables manufacturers to tailor materials to specific performance needs, whether in sportswear, robotics, or food packaging.

Sustainability Embedded in Strategy

BASF’s TPU business is aligned with the company’s broader commitment to climate neutrality and circularity. The use of renewable electricity, low-carbon raw materials, and recyclable product designs reflects a growing demand for sustainable manufacturing across Asia-Pacific.

In cable and wire applications, for instance, BASF’s Elastollan® TPU is used in protection for power and control cables across industries from electric vehicles’ charging cables, industrial robotics, consumer electronics to energy infrastructure. The material remains flexible across a wide temperature range—from -40°C to 125°C—while offering resistance to abrasion, oil, and chemicals. The Elastollan® FHF and Elastollan® FR series, designed for cable jacket materials with enhanced mechanical and flam properties, help manufacturers meet the most demanding industrial and safety standards with confidence.

Footwear and Consumer Goods

In the race to redefine comfort and performance in footwear, Elastollan® has emerged as the material of choice for brands pushing the boundaries of innovation for midsoles and outsoles. With the expanded portfolio now including both TPU and E-TPU variants like Infinergy®, designers can craft lightweight midsoles that deliver exceptional energy return and durability. From high-performance sports shoes to everyday casual wear and rugged safety boots, Elastollan® enables sustainable, versatile solutions that meet the evolving demands of modern consumers.

Beyond footwear, TPU’s adaptability is evident in consumer goods. Products like smartwatch straps, phone cases, and baby stroller wheels benefit from the durability and tactile appeal of Elastollan®. Meanwhile, Freeflex® TPU fiber is making waves in waterproof and windproof clothing, offering lightweight, breathable, and water-repellent nanomembranes.  Thanks to its soft and skin-friendly nature, Freeflex® is also well-suited for infant care, enabling the creation of breathable pyjamas that ensure comfort and diaper elastic bands that provide a snug yet gentle fit.

Medical and Industrial Applications

In healthcare, BASF’s TPU innovations are gaining traction. A pilot project with Shanghai Seventh People’s Hospital showcased the potential of Elastollan® TPU 3D Mesh, whose spiral structure supports medical device applications. In industrial settings, TPU’s resistance to microbes, hydrolysis, and ozone makes it ideal for tubes and hoses used in automation and food processing.

In the fast-paced world of automation, speed, safety, and reliability are everything. That’s why BASF is reinforcing its partnership with Festo, a global leader in automation technology, by locally supplying its Elastollan® food contact (FC) grade of Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU), including Elastollan® 1198AFC.

With GMP certification at BASF’s Shanghai plant, Festo now benefits from faster access to high-performance materials that meet global food safety standards, supporting pneumatic tubing used in critical food and medical applications.

Elastollan® also powers elevator traction belts, offering higher elasticity, strength, and flame retardancy. This is especially critical in enclosed or high-traffic environments like vehicles and high-rise buildings. BASF’s halogen-free flame retardant TPU grades meet the stringent UL94 V-0 classification, supporting compliance with national and municipal fire safety codes. These materials not only enhance occupant safety but also align with sustainable building practices. Additionally, cold-climate TPU grades provide resilience in harsh environments.

Asia-Pacific Expansion and Localisation

BASF’s TPU plant in Shanghai is certified to produce Elastollan® GMP certified TPU grade under Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), bringing production closer to customers in the region. The company is also preparing to launch a visitor center at its Zhanjiang Verbund Site, showcasing TPU applications in footwear, consumer goods, and medical devices.

Looking Ahead

As TPU technology evolves, BASF is deepening its partnerships with OEMs and tier suppliers across Asia-Pacific. The company’s focus on material science, sustainability, and regional collaboration positions it as a key player in shaping the future of manufacturing.

For APAC-based businesses and regional suppliers, BASF’s TPU innovations offer a compelling opportunity to enhance product performance while meeting rising environmental standards.
