Envalior and PerfoTec launch new film technology for fresh produce

Envalior and PerfoTec, a Dutch company specializing in smart packaging technologies for fresh produce, have launched a new film technology for packaging fresh produce that sets new standards.

The new packaging solution extends the natural shelf life of bell peppers fourfold. After two weeks of storage at 8°C, there is no weight loss, fungal growth, or color change.

Envalior's Arnitel TPC thermoplastic copolyester elastomer features ultra-precise laser perforation and breathability, which create optimal atmosphere for fresh produce inside the packaging. It also eliminates the need to add protective gases (Modified Atmosphere Packaging, MAP) inside the packaging. The packaging adapts to the respiration of the product, significantly extending its shelf life, quality, and freshness.

This next-generation technology has already been successfully implemented in PerfoTec BinLiners for lining and sealing large harvest containers and in PerfoTec covers for transport pallets.

"Our new packaging solution extends the natural shelf life of bell peppers fourfold. After two weeks of storage at 8°C, there is no weight loss, fungal growth, or color change. Peony roses can be stored for 14 weeks without aging," explained Bas Groeneweg, founder of PerfoTec.

Microperforation and permeation properties extend product freshness

The microperforation and permeation properties of the film allow the oxygen and CO2 permeability of the packaging to be individually adjusted. This creates an ideal low oxygen concentration inside the packaging.

At the same time, excessive accumulation of carbon dioxide is prevented. The low oxygen content slows down the metabolic processes in the packaged goods and inhibits the growth of aerobic microorganisms and oxidative reactions, all of which contribute to aging and spoilage.

"Thanks to the high water vapor permeability of our Arnitel TPC film, which is only about 40 micrometers thick, and the precise laser perforation, which is tailored to the respiration of the respective plant product, excess moisture can escape while natural moisture is retained. This balance prevents moisture from condensing, mold from forming, and the packaged goods from drying out during storage or transport," explained Dr. Reimo Nickel, Key Account Manager at Envalior.

In addition to the BinLiner, the same Arnitel TPC film is also used in PerfoTec pallet covers, developed to protect fresh produce on pallets during storage and transport. The pallet cover is an efficient solution for logistics chains where maintaining the product quality of sensitive products is crucial.

Tough, puncture-resistant, and sustainable

Another key advantage of this film is its exceptional toughness and puncture resistance. Sharp plant stems and branches cannot damage it, ensuring the packaging remains sealed. In addition, the film can be precisely laser-perforated with holes measuring only 50-60 micrometers. It is approved worldwide for food contact and contains no components derived from genetic engineering.

As a thermoplastic material, the film is easy to recycle, unlike chemically cross-linked packaging materials, making it a more sustainable packaging solution.

"The use of the Arnitel TPC film can contribute to significant reductions in CO2 emissions and costs. The longer shelf life of fresh produce opens up the opportunity to use slower means of transport and switch from air to sea freight, for example, which reduces the carbon footprint by 80 to 90% and logistics costs by 70 to 90%," said Groeneweg.
