Coastal organisms found colonizing plastic waste in the open sea

A new commentary published in Nature Communications reports that coastal plants and animals are hitching rides out to sea aboard plastic waste. They are able to survive and grow on those waste hundreds of miles out to sea in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre.
