SEALIVE: EU-funded project to advance biobased solutions

Fishing nets are one of the key products as the project solution, which used TotalEnergies Corbion Luminy PLA bioplastics. The material is also used in fishing crates and oyster mesh bags.

The fishing nets produced in the project can be industrially composted in less than 6 months and are assumed to dissolve after 10 years if they escape into the ocean, which is 40 times faster than conventional plastic fishing nets.

Another objective of SEALIVE project is knowledge sharing, through events, workshops and trainings for downstream converters, end-users and other stakeholders.

In June 2023, partners from the project visited the implementation pilots of the biobased fishing nets in Cyprus. They had the opportunity to meet and discuss with fishermen involved in the pilot during this visit.

Another key highlight of the SEALIVE project was an optical sorter developed by Pellenc ST. It can identify and separate the different bioplastics from waste streams, avoiding contamination and ensuring circularity of materials.

Biodegradable, compostable or recyclable, bioplastics can be separated from the most commonly used recyclable polymers, like PET, PE, PP or PS.

Last but not least, the project also promotes regulatory support for biobassed plastics.
