Dow’s ionomers grade for sustainable cosmetic and perfume packaging

Dow launched two new sustainable ionomers grades – SURLYN CIR and SURLYN REN, which use renewable and circular feedstocks. The new grades mark a significant moment for cosmetic industry packaging and create sustainable and high-quality cosmetic and perfume packaging.

The two new sustainable ionomers can be used in cosmetic and perfume packaging.

 

SURLYN CIR are ionomers produced from mixed plastic waste while SURLYN REN are ionomers produced from bio-waste such as used cooking oil (UCO).

 

SURLYN CIR ionomers are created through chemical recycling technologies, breaking down mixed waste plastics into their basic chemical elements. The ionomers contribute to circularity and function as equivalent to the virgin fossil feedstock.

 

SURLYN Ren ionomers are produced using bio-waste such as cooking oil. This process utilizes waste residues or by-products from alternative product processes from other industries, which will not consume extra land resources or compete with food chain.

 

Both sustainable ionomers’ production processes are certified on a mass balance basis by the International Sustainability Carbon Certification (ISCC Plus).

 

LVMH was the first user of these new grades following the brand’s collaboration with Dow in earlier 2023. Dow has started to supply the new sustainable SURLYN ionomer grades, which will be integrated into several of the multinational’s applications.

 

“These products will not only support LVMH towards their sustainability goals but will also contribute to Dow’s bold ambition to transform waste and deliver 3 million metric tons per year of circular and renewable solutions by 2030,” concluded Daniella Souza Miranda, global business director for Circular & Renewable Solutions at Dow.
