Idemitsu’s second SPS production plant in Malaysia starts commercial operation

Idemitsu Advanced Materials (Malaysia), a subsidiary of Idemitsu Kosan, commenced commercial operation of its second syndiotactic polystyrene (SPS) production plant in Pasir Gudang, Johor, Malaysia.


The site supports annual production capacity of 9,000 tons, which doubles the production scale of SPS resin in the company. It also has easier access to styrene monomer (SM), the raw material for SPS, from Idemitsu SM (Malaysia), which is located next to the new SPS plant.

The second SPS production plant started its commercial operation.

 

SPS resin is a purely Japanese engineering plastic that Idemitsu first succeeded in synthesizing in 1985 and reach commercialization in 1997. It features outstanding heat resistance with melting point 270°C, hot water resistance, electrical insulation and radio wave permeability.

The resin is widely applied in automotive parts including those for electric vehicles, home appliances, and daily-use products such as tableware and microwave oven cooking containers. The demand and application are expanding.
