Avient launches new acetaldehyde control technology for PET packaging

Jan 29, 2024

Avient launches ColorMatrix AAnchor, an acetaldehyde control technology designed for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) packaging. This innovative solution also addresses the challenges associated with increased recycled PET (rPET) content by offering improved recyclability and enhanced bottle quality.

Avient’s new acetaldehyde control solution addresses challenges associated with rPET packaging.

Challenge is raised as higher rPET content requires more acetaldehyde (AA) scavenger, which can lead to issues related to accumulation, such as migration and increased risk of exceeding regulatory migration limits.

ColorMatrix AAnchor has very low tendency for migration. Thus, it reduces the risk of exceeding regulatory limits, even in closed-loop recycling systems, where accumulation and migration risk are highest.

Improved thermal stability also offers improved processability, avoiding processing issues related to sublimation and deposition on equipment and molds, helping to improve efficiency and throughput.

Nevertheless, the new packaging solution also offers outstanding bottle aesthetics and mechanical strength. These extend the shelf life of packaged products while helping control odor and minimize the risk of off-taste in bottle contents. It is also compliant with European food contact regulations.

“By addressing the challenges associated with increased rPET content, ColorMatrix AAnchor helps brands achieve their sustainability goals while delivering high-quality PET packaging,” concluded Andrea Smith, Global Product Manager.
