Partnership formed to mass produce PET caps in NA

Aug 15, 2024

Origin Materials and Reed City Group announced a strategic partnership to mass produce PET caps and closures in North America, with unmodified virgin PET or 100% recycled PET plastic.

Origin Materials and Reed City Group will partner to mass produce PET caps and closures.

The companies will operate Origin PET cap and closure commercial manufacturing lines in Reed City Group’s Michigan facilities. With high-speed equipment and automation, the lines will convert virgin and recycled PET into caps.

Origin’s caps enhance recycling circularity through cap tethering, enabling mono-material containers, lighter packaging and improved shelf life. They are also positioned to be the first commercially viable PET closures to reach the mass market.

The mass production of PET caps for North American region is expected to begin later this year. Origin’s PCO 1881-compatible caps, which can be made with virgin or recycled PET, will be available beginning in Q4 2024, with PCO 1881-compatible tethered caps and other cap types to follow afterward.

John Bissell, Co-CEO and Co-Founder of Origin, stated that the partnership with Reed City Group enables geographic expansion complementary to Origin’s previously announced mass production capacity based in Europe.
