BASF, Yangtze River Delta Physics Research Center Co., Ltd. (IOPLY), and Beijing Welion New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. (Welion New Energy) have signed a cooperation agreement to develop next-generation solid-state battery packs.

The collaboration will focus on incorporating non-metallic components using advanced material solutions to improve lightweighting, thermal safety management, and functionality.

BASF, IOPLY and Welion sign cooperation agreement to pioneer next-generation solid-state battery pack.

Welion New Energy, a global leader in solid-state battery technology, will lead the cell and battery system design. Chairman Huigen Yu stated that this project will serve as a demonstration for solid-state battery vehicles in the near future.

BASF will contribute its expertise in material development for non-metallic components. Also, it is expanding its product portfolio to meet the requirements for next-generation solid-state batteries.

Dr. Jeffrey Lou, President and Chairman of BASF Greater China, emphasized the company’s commitment to China’s green transformation and its role in advancing electric vehicle technologies. Andy Postlethwaite, Senior Vice President of Performance Materials Asia Pacific at BASF, highlighted the partnership as a strategic step in driving innovation in the new energy vehicle (NEV) and solid-state battery sectors.

IOPLY will provide academic support, building on the success of the BASF-IOPLY joint research center for eMobility and energy storage (BIRC). Dr. Jiangping Hu, Deputy Director of the Institute of Physics at CAS, noted that the collaboration will enhance the safety and efficiency of solid-state battery packs.

In 2024, the three partners unveiled a concept solid-state battery pack at the China EV100 forum, showcasing BASF’s solutions for lightweighting, thermal management, safety, and sustainability. This agreement marks a significant step forward in the development of cutting-edge battery technologies for the NEV industry.
