Trinseo to close MMA production facilities in Italy
Trinseo, a specialty material solutions provider, has announced a series of strategic plans in a dynamic global environment.
Closure of MMA production facilities in Italy
By the end of this year, Trinseo will conclude the closure of its methyl methacrylate (MMA) production operations at its facility in Rho, Italy, as well as its acetone cyanohydrin (ACH) production operations in Porto Marghera, Italy. ACH serves as a precursor to MMA.
Going forward, the company will source MMA feedstock from third-party producers, ensuring a continuous supply while enhancing the overall cost-effectiveness of downstream product production.
Trinseo will continue its polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) operations and maintain its recently opened depolymerization pilot facility in Rho.
Potential closure of PS production facility in Germany
Additionally, Trinseo has initiated an information and consultation process with the Works Council of Trinseo Deutschland GmbH regarding the potential closure of its polystyrene (PS) production at the Schkopau, Germany facility. The company intends to consolidate the remaining PS production at its location in Tessenderlo, Belgium.
“These plans are a by-product of the continuing challenges we and our peers in the European chemical industry have been facing for the past several years, including weak end market demand, high energy prices, and increased imports from Asia,” stated Trinseo President and CEO Frank Bozich.
