Carbon capture technology for sustainable beauty packaging

L’Oréal Groupe is taking a new step in decarbonizing its supply chains by announcing a multi-year partnership with Dioxycle, a startup pioneering in clean chemistry, to transform captured carbon emissions into high-performance, sustainable packaging materials.

 

Using carbon electrolysis technology, Dioxycle converts carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide from industrial emissions into sustainable ethylene, a main raw material for producing polyethylene.

 

Polyethylene is one of the most widely used plastics in global packaging and is traditionally produced from fossil sources.

 

The resulting ethylene can be used to produce polyethylene with identical performance to conventional plastic.

 

“The conversion of carbon emissions into innovative materials unlocks unprecedented avenues for increasingly desirable, high-performing, and sustainable packaging, paving the way for a new era of environmental footprint reduction for our industry and beyond,” said Jacques Playe, SVP Global Development Packaging, L’Oréal Groupe.

 

This innovative approach acts as a drop-in solution as its delivers virgin-quality performance while dramatically reducing carbon footprint, a combination of no-compromise sustainability and functionality.

This partnership is an asset for L’ORÉAL as Scope 3 emissions represent the largest share of emissions companies aim to address (e.g. purchase goods and services).
