Bio-based packaging in sync with organic coffee roaster

Oct 20, 2016

Peeze, the only coffee refinery in the Netherlands that supplies 100% certified coffee, will be the first coffee company in the world using Braskem's I'm green polyethylene (PE) for their coffee packaging.

In October 2016, Peeze started replacing its fossil based packaging with bio-based packaging partially using Braskem's green PE. For every kg of I'm green PE used in the Peeze packaging, more than 4.5kg of CO2 is saved, according to the Brazilian materials supplier.

"It is a great pleasure to see Peeze, a company that is producing all its coffee on a CO2 neutral basis, also recognizing that the packaging can contribute to reducing its carbon footprint," said Marco Jansen, Commercial Director Renewable Chemicals Europe & North America, Braskem Europe.

"Six years ago we started our search for a more sustainable way of packing our coffee beans. This was rather difficult because coffee is a sensitive product: for oxygen and moisture. Together with our partners we can finally make a step with this bio-based foil. A step towards our ambition to have a circular business model," said Timmo Terpstra, Managing Director at Peeze.

Servo Artpack is responsible for producing the bio-based laminated packaging that is defined and certified through Bio4Pack.

"It's another example of the growing possibilities in making packaging sustainable without compromising on quality compared to traditional packaging," said Patrick Gerritsen, CEO of Bio4Pack. "This kind of packaging is a part to the solution for a bio-based economy, leading to a more sustainable world."

Braskem is showing this bio-based packaging at K 2016.
