BASF offers up to 100% bio-based Ultramid PA for flexible packaging films
BASF announced that it is now offering high performance Ultramid polyamide (PA) that is derived entirely from renewable raw materials.
As said, up to 100% fossil resources can be replaced at the beginning of the integrated production process with certified biomass. The share of renewable raw materials in the sales product will be indicated in the respective quantity, with a third-party certification confirms that BASF has used the required quantities of renewable raw materials which the customer has ordered in the value chain.
The resulting Ultramid, which is produced according to the so called mass balance approach, is identical in terms of formulation and quality but associated with lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and saving of fossil resources, said BASF. Also, existing plants and technologies along the value chain can continue to be used without changes.
"Consumer demand for products made of renewable raw materials continues to rise," mentions Joachim Queisser, Senior Vice President of the Polyamides and Precursors Europe regional business unit, BASF. "This offering opens excellent possibilities for packaging film manufacturers to market their products accordingly."
This technology is also being introduced at interpack 2014, currently running until May 14 in Düsseldorf, Germany.
BASF's Ultramid line of products include Ultramid B (PA 6), Ultramid C (PA 6/6.6 copolymer), Ultramid A (PA 6.6) and Ultramid S Balance (PA 6.10).
