Growing use of plastics in Chinese construction industry

Jul 12, 2007
Plastics have emerged as one of the major construction materials in China. Widely considered the "fourth generation" building source after steel, wood and cement, engineered plastics are now commonly found in pipes, window frames, heat insulation appliances, and so on.

Demand is expected to grow as China is posting a soaring housing demand, not to mention the boom being experienced during the country's preparation for Beijing Olympics 2008 and Shanghai Expo 2010.

According to statistics, in developed countries and regions, plastic pipes makes up 50% of the pipe market, but China is still far behind with only 25%. That also means a lot of room for expansion. The Ministry of Construction of the PRC has estimated that demand for plastic pipes in China will reach RMB$800 billion in 10 years.

The China National Center for Test of Chemical Building Materials has issued suggestions and guidelines on the use of chemical and plastic construction materials.
