PPG opens US$30-million battery pack application center in China

Jun 2, 2023

PPG has inaugurated a US$30-million battery pack application center (BPAC) in Tianjin, China. The facility features a full range of capabilities to test the application of PPG coatings technologies, materials and systems for electric vehicle (EV) battery packs.

The modular design of the BPAC allows for independent projects to be carried out concurrently in each of the application areas. This flexibility will enable development of material and process solutions across the range of current and potential customers.

“The new facility will be an important way for customers to validate our customizable coatings solutions that help them reduce application cost, increase battery life, range and charging speed, and contribute to occupant safety,” said Vincent Robin, PPG global vice president, Automotive Coatings.

Opening of a Color Creation Lab

At the same time, PPG has opened a Color Creation Lab in collaboration with automaker Chery Automobile Co., Ltd. At the facility, located in Wuhu, China, PPG color stylists and Chery designers will create new colors tailored to specific vehicle designs for application in Chery’s manufacturing plants.

The Color Creation Lab features innovative solutions for color digitization, analysis and evaluation on interior and exterior automotive parts. The process includes extensive sampling and formulation testing.

PPG began supplying Chery with coatings for its paint lines in 2003. In 2008, PPG opened an automotive coatings plant in Wuhu to support Chery and other manufacturers in China.
