Stylish HMI panels by IMD process for household appliances

Nov 20, 2023

LEONHARD KURZ, an expert for functional and decorative surfaces, Marquardt, a mechatronics specialist, and KURZ’s subsidiary PolyIC, an expert in manufacturing touch sensors and printed electronics, collaborated to pool their expertise and demonstrate new ways of designing surfaces using two demonstration devices for washing machine control panels. Both are produced using In-Mold Decoration (IMD) process.

HMI panel with closed black surface

The first demonstrator variant – a Human-Machine Interface panel (HMI panel) in 16:9 format with TFT display, on its smooth, closed black surface. With Shy Tech design and backlighting, the front only activates when touched or approached. Integrated touchscreen sensor from PolyIC enables operation via touch.

When the device is switched off, icons and displays disappear again, so that the smooth surface “dead front” is visible again.

The control panels are planned to be produced using efficient IMD process.

Nick Wagner, Head of Business Area Plastic Decoration Sales and Marketing at KURZ stated that the component can be produced in just one highly efficient step, and integrate sensors through various processes.

Advantages of such process include low time and energy consumption, and the possibility to implement individual, customer-specific motifs.

A special highlight is a Near Field Communication (NFC) allows you to recall previously saved adjustment settings and profiles, which is useful for fields where several people share a washing machine, such as apartment buildings or student residences.

Wood look panel with backlit functions and designs

The second demonstrating device can also be applied in washing machines, dryers and other household appliances. The control panel stands out with its wood look.

It is also equipped with a round display integrated into the switch surface in addition to Shy Tech functionality. A PolyIC touch sensor was installed here to control the integrated function keys and sliders. They are complemented by a haptic push-turn control from Marquardt, which is used in intuitive operation and also serves as a targeted stylistic element.

Backlit touch buttons on the panel and company logos can also be backlit. IMD process is used to apply logos and patterns, as well as customer-specific artwork.

“The IMD technology used creates an experience for all the senses. While the eye-catching wood look attracts attention, the demonstrating device impresses when touched with its unique, memorable feel. Other variations are also possible, which can be customized through the targeted use of light, backlighting, and color,” explained Alexander Resner, Product Manager from Marquardt.
