UBE’s nylon 6 resin used for hydrogen tank liner in Toyota’s FCEV

Jan 16, 2024

UBE Corporation announced it is supplying UBE NYLON 1218IU, a polyamide (nylon) 6 resin, for the new Crown fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) which is recently released by Toyota Motor Corporation. This marks the second Toyota Motor fuel cell passenger vehicle model to use UBE’s nylon 6 resin.

Co-developed by UBE and Toyota Motor, UBE NYLON 1218IU is a nylon 6 resin for use as plastic liner material in the high-pressure hydrogen tank for fuel cell vehicles (FCVs).

The resin meets stringent standards to be used as plastic liner material for high-pressure hydrogen tank in the Crown FCEV. As the innermost component (inner liner) of the tank, the plastic liner prevents hydrogen from leaking out of the tank.

The nylon 6 resin delivers superior performance for hydrogen permeation prevention and outstanding mechanical performance, in terms of durability to withstand sudden changes in tank temperature from filling and discharging hydrogen, and impact resistance in low-temperature environments.

Since 1959, UBE has manufactured and marketed nylon 6 resin. The Japanese company reaches a global manufacturing capacity of 198,000 tons annually. In recent years, UBE has expanded its global presence as composite materials manufacturer. It boasts a production capacity of 53,000 tons of engineering plastics composite materials, spanning operations in Japan, Asia, Europe, and North America.
