SGL Carbon supplies battery case with glass fiber reinforced plastic

Jan 29, 2024

E-Works Mobility, a Munich-based company specializes in the development and production of electrically powered vans, replaces its currently used aluminum battery boxes, HEERO e-transporter, with those made of glass-reinforced plastic from SGL Carbon.

E-Works Mobility replaces its previous aluminum battery box with glass fiber-reinforce plastic.

Glass fiber-reinforced plastic produces highly stable protective battery casings that offer several advantages, in terms of energy and raw material efficiency, as well as in the safety-relevant area.

The newly developed battery housing offers considerable weight savings. Lighter weight with comparable or even better stability contributes to better dynamic driving performance and ultimately a longer range.

Glass fiber-reinforced plastic also provides lower heat conduction, compared to aluminum or even steel. This leads to better battery insulation and fire protection.

The material is also fire-retardant, which implies that it only transfers heat to neighboring components to very limited extent after an accident.

In addition, the material is highly resistant to corrosion and has high electromagnetic compatibility.

Following extensive prototype tests, SGL Carbon is now supplying the first battery boxes made of glass fiber-reinforced plastic to E-Works Mobility.
