SABIC introduces new resin with molded-in color for automotive exterior

SABIC introduced LNP ELCRES SLX1271SR resin, a new addition to its weatherable LNP SLX copolymer portfolio. This specialty material features with molded-in color enhanced scratch and mar resistance and a high-gloss surface finish.

The new resin offers a list of advantages for achieving better performance and aesthetics. In terms of scratch resistance, the material shows similar performance to painted polymer substrates in the wet scrub (car wash) test.

 

NP ELCRES SLX1271SR resin also owns better heat resistance of about 120°C, compared to acrylic-based resins like PMMA or PMMA/ASA, which has heat resistance of about 80°C.

 

With the intrinsic UV absorption layer, the new resin can maintain its gloss and mechanical performance better than other paint-free thermoplastics, for up to 10 years or more.

 

The paint-free resin also reduces VOC emissions while delivering outstanding aesthetics. Vivid, mold-in colors, such as piano black, and a high-gloss surface finish are available.

 

LNP ELCRES SLX1271SR resin is suitable for automotive exterior parts such as spoilers, grilles and mirror housings, it is also well suited for computer electronics housings and outdoor infrastructure components like solar panels.

 

This novel resin is a 2024 Edison Best New Product Awards finalist in the Advanced Materials category.
