Sharing information to accelerate packaging sustainability

 

Google shared its Plastic-Free Packaging Design Guide which is one of the company’s first publications that shares technical details from its consumer hardware sustainability work.

 

It contains insights gained from the company’s design, engineering and operations efforts in creating more sustainable packaging.

 

By sharing the insights, Google aims to inspire other companies with similar sustainability ambitions, encouraging them to share knowledge and practices across various sustainability topics.

Focuses of sustainable packaging design

 

Google creates more sustainable packaging with focus on many different improvement opportunities.

 

The company initially concentrated on lowering the overall packaging weight and volume. Google made significant progress in reducing both weight and volume by over 50% from its first Pixel phone to Pixel 8.

 

Another focus of Google’s packaging design is to optimize packaging design for recyclability. The company has been steadily reducing the use of plastic packaging to ease recyclability for municipalities and waste management systems.

 

Pixel 8 is Google’s first product designed with 100% plastic-free packaging, excluding adhesive materials and required plastic stickers. This aligns to the company’s commitment to eliminate plastic from hardware product packaging by 2025.
