Seashell waste transforms into plastic dye
A research team in Thailand has invented a plastic dye for 3D printers which is made from shells of green mussels and bioplastic waste.

The amount of seashell waste generated has been increased to 16 million tons in 2018. A pot of baked mussels roughly generated 500 grams of seashell waste.
Chutiparn Lertvachirapaiboon, a scientific researcher at the National Nanotechnology Centre in Thailand, invented a plastic dye for 3D printers, which is made from shells of green mussels and bioplastic waste.
As seashells contain biocalcium carbonate, the material can replace calcium carbonate from polymer production. This reduces environmental impacts.
