LyondellBasell introduces sustainable PP solution for rigid packaging

Apr 2, 2025

LyondellBasell (LYB), a global leader in the chemical industry, has unveiled Pro-fax EP649U, a new polypropylene (PP) impact copolymer tailored for the rigid packaging sector. Engineered for thin-walled injection molding, this advanced material is particularly well-suited for food packaging applications, offering manufacturers a combination of performance and sustainability.

Key advantages of Pro-fax EP649U include high flow rate, excellent organoleptic properties, high flexural modulus, and nucleated anti-static performance, making it a versatile and responsible choice for modern packaging needs.

Pro-fax EP649U delivers high flow properties and rapid crystallization, enabling efficient production of thin-walled containers while improving both manufacturing productivity and end-product quality. Its specialized additive package ensures easy mold release, reduced static buildup, and smoother downstream handling on high-speed filling lines. Furthermore, the material’s high flexural modulus enhances container stack strength, allowing for thinner walls and lightweighting without compromising impact resistance.

A standout feature of Pro-fax EP649U is its superior organoleptic properties, eliminating the risk of unwanted taste or odor transfer often associated with controlled rheology byproducts. The product complies with U.S. and international food contact regulations, utilizing a non-phthalate catalyst and exclusively non-animal-derived additives for greater safety and sustainability.

To support eco-conscious manufacturing, Pro-fax EP649U is available within LyondellBasell’s CirculenRenew and CirculenRevive portfolios—solutions designed to help brands meet recycled-content and carbon-reduction targets. Both product lines adhere to the ISCC PLUS standard, employing a mass-balance approach to trace renewable and recycled content. CirculenRenew is derived from bio-based waste and residues, while CirculenRevive incorporates pyrolysis oil from plastic waste feedstock, providing sustainable alternatives without sacrificing performance.
