Toray’s joint venture with Samsung to expand power inductor coil production facilities

Jul 7, 2026

Toray Industries announced that STEMCO, a joint venture between Toray and Samsung Electro-Mechanics for printed circuit boards and electronic components, will expand power inductor coil production facilities.

The first production line started operation in April 2025. STEMCO will buy land next to the headquarters for a second line, which will roughly double power inductor coil manufacturing capacity to meet growing global demand. Operations are expected to start in fall 2028.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ power inductors are compact and deliver low resistance at high frequencies, contributing to package designs that cut power losses. Combining Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ and STEMCO’s plating technologies has enhanced production efficiency.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics accounts for a high share of the market for thin-film power inductors, which it has positioned as a strategic growth business.

STEMCO has amassed plating and precision microfabrication technologies in manufacturing chip-on-film flexible printed circuit boards for televisions and mobile products. It drew on those technologies to begin supplying power inductor coils to Samsung Electro-Mechanics in February 2025. The latter company employs these coils in its thin-film power inductors, for which it decided to boost production capacity to meet strong demand.

What is power inductor?

A power inductor comprises a coil-shaped circuit molded in magnetic material. It converts voltage and stabilizes current. Thin-film types can curb power consumption and heat generation during high-frequency switching.

What is the application of power inductor?

Power inductors contribute to cutting power consumption in AI-enabled smartphones, AI data centers, and autonomous driving-related automotive equipment. As of the end of June 2026, Toray research estimated that the thin-film power inductor market will grow about 18% annually.
