GRAFE develops masterbatch as an alternative for automotive blacks

Jul 25, 2023

GRAFE has developed the new BASE BLACK masterbatch for polypropylene (PP), which is said as an efficient alternative for the most common automotive black shades.

As introduced, BASE BLACK is permanently available and can be flexibly adjusted. It also offers a significantly better price level compared to an OEM direct color.

BASE BLACK achieves excellent color values at standard parameters in the production process, which are within the OEM tolerance and only deviate slightly from the direct colors. There are only minimal differences when comparing L*a*b* color values at automakers, such as Audi/VW, Daimler, Renault/Dacia, Tesla and BMW.

BASE BLACK is permanently available and can be flexibly adjusted.

“The development is used for rapid initial sampling and can be brought to the target through process optimization,” explains Lars Schulze, Head of Color Development and Material Sciences.

GRAFE supports customers in the final optimization step to the perfect color as BASE BLACK can be adjusted in the production process by minimal parameter shifts, such as dosage, processing temperature, and pressure.

“Our product represents an alternative to the otherwise usual detailed settings that are adjusted to the polymer and component,” adds Johannes Grau, Strategic Accounts Mobility Solutions.

GRAFE has a comprehensive portfolio of OEM color formulations and supplies masterbatch and compound formulations for automotive interior colors to automakers.
