Teijin’s Tenax TPCL, a carbon fiber intermediate material, and its Panlite Sheet, a polycarbonate (PC) product, are used for the housing of the world’s lightest portable displays VAIO Vision+, developed by VAIO Corporation.

VAIO Vision+ is a portable display that uses a carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic resin housing.

Tenax TPCL intermediate is a sheet-like material made of woven carbon fiber impregnated with thermoplastic resin. It is lightweight, resistant to heat and impact, strong and rigid, and also meets flame-retardant requirements for electrical products. This material is used for the VAIO Vision+ housing’s top and bottom layers of the sandwich structure.

Panlite Sheet, made from PC resin and used for the middle layer, has excellent dimensional stability, light weight and impact resistance.

The structure of housing sandwiches Panlite Sheet between Tenax TPCL layers achieves the shape and strength of the connections necessary for assembly without the need for metal parts.

Tenax TPCL is used for the top and bottom layers of the housing and Panlite Sheet for the middle layer.

This material solution allows manufacturing of complex, three-dimensional shapes in a single molding step, which reduces the number of steps required to manufacture the housing, and also reduces CO2 emissions.

Teijin’s materials help achieve the world's lightest weight portable display, weighing approximately 325g, with its thinnest point being approximately 3.9mm. The VAIO Vision+ 14 and the VAIO Vision 14P were launched in Japan early July.
