Indonesian government promotes biodegradable plastics development

Jul 18, 2025

The Indonesian government aims to lead regional efforts in developing biodegradable plastics by adopting biotransformation technology, according to Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, reported ANTARA News.

Biotransformation technology uses living organisms to break down plastics, leaving no microplastics or toxic residues. Its application also enables industries to either recycle or decompose waste.

In his statement, the Industry Minister said that such technology offers concrete solution to plastic waste problem, especially single-use plastics. With this plan, Indonesia has the potential to become a regional pioneer in the development and use of biodegradable plastics.

The Ministry of Industry will create a road map and action plan, starting with drafting a national standard for biodegradable plastic products. In addition to promoting environmental sustainability, the initiative could expand market access for domestic products, as global demand for eco-friendly practices continues to rise.

The ministry also plans to formulate policies to identify potential raw materials for biodegradable plastic production, while ensuring that green industry growth does not compromise national food security.

The government may also offer incentives to industry players who take concrete steps in support of the green plastic initiative.
